Prep roundup: Archbishop Murphy throws for 387 yards to beat Cedarcrest
Published 11:44 pm Friday, October 17, 2008
DUVALL — Cedarcrest came into Friday night’s Cascade Conference game determined to stop the Archbishop Murphy running game.
Murphy’s quarterback tandem of Jake Downs and Austin VanderWel responded by throwing for 387 yards and three touchdowns.
Murphy scored 20 points in the first quarter, Alex Martinez had four catches for 153 yards and the Wildcats ran right past host Cedarcrest to take a 47-20 victory and remain undefeated.
“Cedarcrest came in determined to stop the run,” Archbishop Murphy coach Dave Ward said. “They packed eight to nine guys in the box.”
Murphy countered by throwing short routes and letting recievers Martinez and JD Melton carve up the Cedarcrest secondary.
Martinez hauled in a 62-yard touchdown pass and also had a 93-yard reception.
Melton, a senior, had three catches for 109 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass
“(our quarterbacks) recognized who was uncovered, got the ball to them quickly, and let them do the rest,” Archbishop Murphy coach Dave Ward said.
Once Cedarcrest tired, the Wildcats were able to grind out 198 yards on the ground.
“It was a physical game,” Ward said. “… Our defense set the tone and we wore them down.”
Matt Huggins had two interceptions for Archbishop Murphy and Nathan Zarate recovered a back-breaking Cedarcrest fumble in the end zone to put the Wildcats up 14-3 early in the first quarter.
