King’s girls soccer locks up 1st Cascade title

EVERETT — The King’s Knights achieved school history Saturday, earning their first Cascade Conference championship in just the program’s third season.

The Knights (12-2 in league, 14-2 overall) defeated the reigning league champion Archbishop Murphy Wildcats 1-0 in a shootout.

Both the Knights and Wildcats (12-2, 13-2-1) finished with a 12-2 league record, but the Knights earned the title by virtue of a season sweep of the Wildcats.

Kelsey Christianson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 4-3 shootout.

Madeline McDevitt earned the shutout for King’s. Alexa Hughes was in goal for the Wildcats.

The 1A King’s finished fourth in state last season after debuting with a 10-6 season in 2006 and a third place finish at the state tournament.

Archbishop Murphy has finished in the top three in the past four 2A state tournaments. The Wildcats won the state title in 2006 and finished third in ‘07.

Cedarcrest 3, Lakewood 0: At Duvall, Rachael Kevin scored two goals, Brooke Chapman chipped in one goal and Cedarcrest (9-5 league, 10-5 overall) out shot Lakewood (5-9, 6-10) 18 to 5 to take a Cascade Conference victory. Kori Butterfield and Jordan Cleman split time in goal for Cedarcrest and Miranda Head started in goal for Lakewood.

Granite Falls 6, Sultan 0: At Granite Falls, Audrey Brown and Kaitlan Howell each scored two goals to help Granite Falls (9-5 league, 10-5 overall) roll to a Cascade Conference victory. Rose Livermore and Katie Cashman each scored once for Granite Falls and Livermore split time with Kelsey Carlson in goal to record the shutout. The keepers for Sultan (0-14, 0-16) were Emily Dir and Kristal Novak.

South Whidbey 6, Coupeville 0: At Coupeville, Paige Miller, Karissa Thomas and Jessica Manka eached scored two goals leading South Whidbey to the Cascade Conference victory over Coupeville. With the victory South Whidbey (7-7 in league and overall) will advance to a play-in game to be determined. Natasha Camps was in goal for the Falcons. Coupeville finishes its season at 2-12.

Lake Stevens 1, Cascade 1: At Lake Stevens, Ricki Cullum’s goal for Cascade in the 80th minute tied the contest and lead to a Wesco North tie against Lake Stevens. Kaleen Berg scored the lone goal for the Vikings (11-2-1 overall). The Bruins moved to 4-7-4 overall.

Marysville-Pilchuck’s Sarah Clark and Marysa Eastman both qualified for the 4A state tournament by scoring over the 315 points needed to qualify for state. Clark posted a degree of difficulty score of 13.8 and set a school record with a total score of 396.4 points. Eastman finished with a score of 331.9.
