MARYSVILLE — Consistency was the name of the game for the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks as they closed out the regular season Wednesday night with a 3-0 win over Wesco North volleyball rival Lake Stevens.
M-P won all three sets with a score of 25-22 to prevent Lake Stevens from clinching a District 1 playoff berth. The Vikings fell into a three-way tie for fourth place with Arlington and Stanwood. A tiebreaker is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at Lake Stevens High School.
“It was a nice way to end the season,” M-P head coach Shelly Johnson said. “We managed to not let down.”
As for having the same score for all three sets, Johnson stated “it’s kind of unusual. I’m not really sure how we managed to do that … all three games were just pretty even until the end.”
M-P (6-2 in league, 9-5 overall) was led by senior Emily Boerger with 16 kills and fellow senior Jade Thompson, who earned 39 digs and plenty of praise from Johnson.
“It was the last night for my seniors and I have a pretty solid group of six,” Johnson said. “Boerger’s been solid for us all season … our libero (Jade) Thompson had 39 digs in three games … that’s pretty solid. She’s like the platform that we run everything off of.”
Brittany Fitzmaurice, another senior, added 37 assists for the Tomahawks.
Lindsey Walter had eight kills and Marchelle Bostic went 11-for-11 serving with one ace for Lake Stevens (3-5, 4-9), which will face Shorewood on Monday to try to extend its’ season.
Meanwhile, M-P is focusing on making a successful shift from the regular season to the postseason.
“The season’s so long,” Johnson said. “It’s nice to get it done so now we can concentrate on going to districts next week.
“Ultimately our goal is to qualify … for the state tournament. Overall I think that our league and the south league are pretty tough this year and its going to be hard to qualify for state,” Johnson said, pointing out such teams as Kamiak, Edmonds-Woodway, Monroe and Snohomish that have also punched a ticket to the district tournament.
