LAKE STEVENS — Thanks to some good defense and some even better offense, the Lake Stevens soccer team will live to play another day.
In the loser-out game, Lake Stevens defeated Snohomish (8-9-1 overall) 4-0 to advance to the third-place game in the 4A District 1 tournament. The Vikings play Shorewood at 11 a.m. at Oak Harbor H.S.
After a 0-0 tie at halftime, the Vikings (14-3-1) came out and scored two goals in two minutes and then just took off from there.
“We had some good fortune,” Lake Stevens head coach Andy Knutson said. “We got the ball rolling…and it just kinda snowballed.”
Taryn Wright and Kinslee Isaman had the early second half goals for Lake Stevens and Sandra Osborn and Kaitlin Evans added goals later in the half for the Vikings.
Knutson was also quick to point out the work of the Lake Stevens defense, and goalkeeper Kaitlin McKenzie.
“The defense and McKenzie did a great job tonight,” Knutson said. McKenzie has a goal scoring average of less than one goal a game, and, with the help of Megan Hemmingson, gave the Vikings their ninth shutout of the season.
“We’re just happy that we have another chance,” Knutson said, “and we’re just hoping to make the best of our opportunities.”
Mount Vernon 4, Meadowdale 3 (SO): At Shoreline, It took a shootout to decide, but Mount Vernon was able to pull out the win in the 3A District 1 playoff game 4-3 over Meadowdale. Meadowdale (15-4 overall) had goals by Maddi Null, Marcail McDonald and Ashley Correa in the playoff game. Tanya Zickefoose (two saves) and Abbie Gustafason (three saves) split time in goal for the Mavericks. Mount Vernon advances to play Shorecrest in a winner-to-state game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Shorewood 2, Stanwood 1: At Stanwood, Hailey Storbeck put Stanwood on the board early with a goal in the third minute, but Louise Albin evened the score five minutes later and Sarah Clements added the eventual game-winner five minutes before halftime to lead Shorewood to the win and give the Thunderbirds a place in the third place game against Lake Stevens on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Oak Harbor H.S. Madison Hollenbeck was the goalkeeper for Shorewood (13-3-2 overall) while Haley Haugstad stood in goal for the Spartans (8-6-4).
Lynden Christian 27, King’s 14: At Shoreline, Zack Berg rushed for 72 yards on six carries but Lynden Christian rallied behind Neils Brisbane who had 35 carries for 144 yards and three touchdowns to lead Lynden Christian to the win in the 1A District 1 playoffs, and give them a spot in the 1A Tri-District tournament. Thomas Vincent completed 9-of-22 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, and added a rushing touchdown for the Knights.

4A District 1 Girls Swim Preliminaries: At Mukilteo, There were plenty of state qualifying times despite the fact the the swimmers were simply swimming for seeding for Saturday’s finals, where the top three swimmers in each event will go to state. Swimmers could still qualify for state in the prelims by accomplishing a state time, which many athletes took advantage of. Jackson sophomore Amber McDermott took it a step further by achieving automatic All-American times in the 200-yard Individual Medley (2 minutes, 4.05 seconds) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.79).
Wesco North tiebreaker: At Lake Stevens, after three extra games, it has been determined that Stanwood will be the No. 4 seed and Arlington the No. 5 seed coming out of the North in the 4A District 1 tournament. Stanwood defeated Arlington in game 1, 25-20, 14-25, 15-13 behind the solid play of Anna Moormeier who had 10 kills. The Spartans then took on Lake Stevens and came-from-behind to beat the Vikings 23-25, 25-20, 15-6 and secure the No. 4 seed. Shelly Dowrey and Kaci Jones each had 12 kills apiece in that game. In the final game, Arlington clinched the No. 5 seed with a 22-25, 25-11, 15-9 win over Lake Stevens.
