Prep soccer/volleyball: Jackson wins shootout

OAK HARBOR — No one said winning a district championship is easy.

Kamiak and Jackson were tied after regulation, tied after two overtimes and tied after five penalty kicks Saturday at Oak Harbor Memorial Stadium. Finally Jackson’s Katie Reese scored on the eighth penalty kick to hand Jackson a 1-0 victory, the 4A District 1 Championship and a No. 1 seed to state.

“This was the third time we played them this season,” Kamiak head coach Beth Stewart said. “So they knew a lot about us, and we knew a lot about them.”

The narrow win improved Jackson’s season record to 14-1-3.

Tana Foster started in goal for Kamiak, which fell to 10-6-2.

KC Wilson started in goal for Jackson.

Shorewood 1, Lake Stevens 0: At Oak Harbor, Louise Albin scored in the first half to hand Shorewood (14-3-2) third place in the 4A District 1 playoffs and a trip to state. Madison Hollenbeck recorded the shutout. Kaitlin McKenzie started in goal for Lake Stevens (14-4-1) in the season-ending loss.

Shorecrest 1, Mt. Vernon 0: At Shoreline, with just 30 seconds remaining in the game, Shorecrest’s Nicole Harris booted a free kick in play and Jessica Rankin headed it in to hand Shorecrest the 3A District 1 No. 2 seed. Shorecrest (13-5-2) will play East Valley of Spokane Tuesday at Spokane in the first round of the state tournament. Caroline Towles recorded the shutout.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Burlington-Edison 0: At Mt. Vernon, Lindsey Bos scored on a header, Tasha Pabisz scored on a breakaway and Maddy Huggins scored in the 79th minute as Archbishop Murphy never trailed on its way to the 2A District 1 championship and a No. 1 state seed. Alexa Hughes recorded the shutout for the Wildcats (16-2-1).

Cedarcrest 2, Granite Falls 0: At Mt. Vernon, Cedarcrest earned a second consecutive trip to the 3A state tournament thanks to goals by Claire O’Donnell (13th minute) and Rachael Kevin (78th). Maggie Pleis assisted on both goals. Cedarcrest goalkeeper Kori Butterfield stopped eight shots on goal. The Red Wolves out-shot Granite Falls 25-8. Granite Falls goalkeeper Kelsey Carlson posted 10 saves.

King’s 3, Seattle Academy 2 (shootout): At Shoreline, King’s captain Kendall Thoreson assisted on goals by Hillary Quinn and Hillary Zevenbergen to force overtime and King’s defeated Seattle Academy 4-2 in a shootout to take the 1A tri-district’s No. 1 seed. King’s (16-2) outshot Seattle Academy 26 to nine. Carolyn Dapper started in goal for King’s.

Boys soccer

Tacoma Baptist 6, Northsound Christian 1: At Everett, Tacoma Baptist rolled to the 2B/1B tri-district No. 1 seed over North Sound Christian.

Shoreline Christian 2, Mount Vernon Christian 1 (shootout): At Everett, Shoreline Christian’s Travis Einfield scored in the 67th minute to force overtime. After two scoreless overtimes, Shoreline Christian won the shootout 5-3 to take the 2B/1B tri-district No. 3 seed. Davis Wahlman started in goal for Shoreline Christian. Caleb Brown was Mt. Vernon’s keeper.

Volleyball

1A Tri-district tournament: At Shoreline, host King’s defeated Cedar Park Christian 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23 to take the 1A tri-district tournament’s No. 1 seed. Anna Cesari had 31 assists, three aces and seven digs, Laura Friar had 12 kills, and Megan Foote had 11 digs in the win. Jordan Irish and Dianna Kirton each chipped in eight kills for King’s (16-1-0).

2B Tri-district tournament: At Edmonds, Darrington survived a marathon five-set match against 10th-ranked Rainier Christian 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23 to advance to the district championship match against La Connor. La Connor defeated Darrington 25-21, 26-24, 25-19 to take the 2B tri-district’s No. 1 seed. The other two state seeds went to Shoreline Christian and Evergreen Lutheran, who placed third and fourth respectively.

1B Tri-district tournament: At Coupeville, North Sound Christian lost to Crescent to fall into the consolation bracket but bounced back to defeat Highland Christian 26-24, 25-12 and 28-26 and take the No. 4 state seed. Chantelle Meeks had seven kills and Maylisa Chung had 21 assists in the win to lead North Sound (16-2). Neah Bay defeated Crescent in the 1B tri-district championship match to take the No. 1 seed. Lummi received the third seed.
