EVERETT — Marysville-Pilchuck used experience and depth to knock off previously undefeated Everett 43-19, as the Tomahawks won the first five matches in the Wesco North wrestling dual meet Tuesday.

The first match featured Tannon Hillis of M-P, who was fifth in state last season, and Alec Bird of Everett, the state’s 3A fourth-place finisher last season in the 215-pound weight class. Tannon put Bird on his back early in the match and won 9-4.

“They (M-P) are pretty solid in all their weights and don’t really have any holes,” said Everett head coach Brien Elliott, whose Seagulls are now 0-1 in Wesco North and 3-1 overall. “We are quite young in a lot of spots and they are an experienced team.”

Brandon Blevins defeated Mike Bearer 5-3 in overtime in the 119-pound weight class. Blevins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Bearer led 3-2 after second. Blevins used an escape in third to tie the match at 3-3 and then got the takedown in overtime.

“That match (at 119) really swung us,” Elliott said. “The start hurt us a little bit, but I really have to put it on them (M-P) that they did a really solid job and came prepared.”
