PREP ROUNDUP

OAK HARBOR — The Marysville-Pilchuck girls golf team had a solid season-opening performance, but it wasn’t enough to hold down Redmond.

The Mustangs shot a 471 and won the Whidbey Shootout at Whidbey Island Golf and Country Club on a blustery Monday afternoon.

“It was windy to start off with, cold,” said Oak Harbor head coach Andy Wesley. “About halfway through the round the sun broke through and it was pretty nice.”

The weather was causing problems for many players during the front nine.

“It (the wind) was blowing the ball down the green, blowing the putts around,” Wesley said. “It made for a lot of high scoring early on.” Snohomish’s Emily Guthrie shot a 45 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine for a 13-over 86. Guthrie finished four strokes behind Redmond’s Kara Zitzman for medalist honors.

Marysville-Pilchuck’s Stacia Ashley shot a 20-over 93 for the second-place Tomahawks.

“Marysville looks really strong this year, they return everybody from last year expect one,” Wesley said.
