EDMONDS — Although its two days from Spring, Kamiak’s Annie Yang and Edmonds-Woodway’s Sheridan Smalley can attest that it certainly didn’t feel that way.
Yang and Smalley were the first players on the court at 3:30 p.m. and the last to leave at 7 p.m. in a match that had three tie-breakers. Yang won 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3), but E-W pieced together a strong performance in the doubles competition, never trailing in any doubles match, and defeated Kamiak 5-2 Thursday in a Wesco South girls tennis meet.
E-W improved to 2-0. Kamiak fell to 1-1.
“They (Yang and Smalley) were on there forever, long sets, long matches, long games,” E-W head coach Dan Crist said. “Sheridan was exhausted, her back was killing her, and it got incredibely cold.
“It was actually the nicest day of the year, the courts dried out real nice. If that match wouldn’t have gone three sets it would have been a pleasant evening,” said Crist, who had two t-shirts, a sweatshirt and jacket on by night’s end.
