PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Aaron Brooks gave the Mountlake Terrace Hawks the pitching performance they needed, and the Hawks’ offense rewarded Brooks in a big way.

The junior pitcher threw all five innings of a Wesco South baseball game shortened because of the 10-run mercy rule, allowing four hits and earning his second win of the season as Mountlake Terrace bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Jackson on Friday with a 12-0 romp of the Timberwolves Tuesday at Mountlake Terrace High School.

“Brooks was great. He’s really been quite a story. He’s emerged as one of our top guys when we really need him to be,” Mountlake Terrace head coach Andrew Watters said.

The Hawks’ hitters put up two six-run innings putting together what Watters called, “the best day we had with the bats this year.”

Chaz Dalton had three RBI, Matt Shafer batted 3-for-4 and Paul Clingan and Karsten Strieby each added two hits and a RBI to lead the Hawks (7-5 in league, 9-5 overall).

It was a big-win for a Hawks team that has stayed in the middle of the pack in a tough division.

“Our league has been difficult. Everybody is so tough in our league. We’ve had a couple of big wins here and there but we haven’t really strung them together yet,” Watters said.

The Hawks currently sit in a tie for fifth in the division — fourth among Class 4A squads — behind 4A-leading Shorewood (9-3, 11-3). The top three 4A teams qualify for the postseason, the fourth 4A team plays in a play-in game.
