Warriors earn playoff berth

Edmonds-Woodway used two second-half goals to finish strong and earn a spot in the 4A District 1 tournament.
Junior Jake Lagucik scored in the 54th minute and fellow junior Jeremy Wentzel scored two minutes later to give the Warriors a 2-0 Western Conference South Division win over Glacier Peak Wednesday night at Edmonds-Woodway.
The win, combined with Mountlake Terrace’s loss, gives Edmonds-Woodway the No. 3 seed to the district tournament.
“They’re (the team) pretty excited (about reaching the tournament),” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Tony Gilman said. “The league has been so even this year, everything has been so hard.”
The Warriors (4-2-3 league, 8-5-3 overall) used a strong defense and solid goalkeeping by Nick Kratzke during a three-game unbeaten streak; Glacier Peak (1-5-3, 5-8-3) managed just four shots on goal in last night’s match.
In the 54th minute, Fareed Zerafat, a sophomore, beat two defenders before slotting a ball on to a well-timed run by Jake Lagucik who put the ball past Glacier Peak sophomore goalkeeper Jimmy Eschrich.
“Fareed made the whole thing happen,” Gilman said of the first goal.
Two minutes later, Jeremy Wentzel took a Ben Wilmot pass down the left side before he curled an 8-yard shot into the far corner of the goal.
Gilman said the Warriors struggled to get into a groove in the first half because of wind and Grizzlies’ keeper Eschrich.
“It was interesting because the wind was a big factor, we went into the wind the first half which made it difficult to get out of our own end most of the time,” Gilman said.
“Their goalie was awesome,” the coach added. “He was diving all over the place making saves.”
Edmonds-Woodway finally broke through in the second half with the wind at its back.
“We started to spread the ball out a little better,” Gilman said.
