MUKILTEO — Freshman Emma Makela is usually minding the nets for Kamiak, but on Thursday she found herself at the other end of the field and the newly-minted forward knocked home one of two successful shootout penalty kicks, and the Knights beat Shorewood 1-0 in the Wesco South clash at Kamiak High School.
With injured forward Lauren Luke on the sidelines, Makela was called into action, and after two forty-minute halfs and a pair of five-minute overtimes, it went to the shootout.
“Just like the last time we played Shorewood, we battled every last minute,” said Kamiak coach Beth Stewart.
Kamiak (2-1 in league, 6-2-2 overall) controlled play for much of the first half, outshooting the Thunderbirds 9-3, but the second half saw Shorewood (1-2 in league and 4-5-1 overall) come out attacking on all cylinders, with eight shots on junior Tana Foster.
“They were gunning for us in the second half,” said Stewart, whose Knights had 11 shots themselves on the Shorewood keeper. “The ball was bouncing all over the place, but nobody could get it through.”
In addition to Makela, senior Hillary Hermes also found the back of the Thunderbird net in the shootout.
Kamiak keeper Tana Foster not only blanked Shorewood during the first 90 minutes, she stopped all four penalty kicks.
“Tana played by far the best game I’ve ever seen her play,” added Stewart. “From the beginning, she was so composed and confident.”
