EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway coach Bill LeCompte’s plan to stop Jackson’s dynamic duo of Cara Wegner and Megan Bolmes worked during regulation play and overtime, but Lori DeLand, Wegner and Bolmes connected on penalty kick tries and Jackson goalie KC Wilson allowed only two goals, giving Jackson a 1-0 shootout victory in the Wesco South opener for both teams at Edmonds District Stadium.
Jackson is now 1-0 in league, 7-0-1 overall. E-W fell to 0-1, 4-1-3.
“Both Jackson and us were looking forward coming into this game,” LeCompte said. “Its a true test, its a true mark to find out how we have grown after our preseason. Both teams came in undefeated, one of us was gonna end up losing.”
LeCompte said that the game was a defensive battle, played mostly in the center of the field, with each team trying any number of attempts to score from long range kicks, to aggressive defensive tactics.
“It was a really hard-fought game back and forth,” LeCompte added, “but its kind of the way it should be when you have two of the best teams playing each other … We were out there dying for each other on the field.”
