Adult son arrested in father’s death
Published 12:15 am Wednesday, December 9, 2009
A physical argument between an adult son and his elderly father on Thanksgiving Day may have led to the father’s death early this month.
A 56-year-old Lynnwood man, and his adult children, went to his parents’ home in unincorporated Edmonds for the holiday. During the holiday, the 56-year-old man’s daughter complained that her 88-year-old grandfather had inappropriately touched her. And later in the day, the young woman’s father witnessed a second alleged incident involving inappropriate touching of his daughter by his elderly father.
A couple of days later the 56-year-old son went back to his 88-year-old father’s house to confront him. The elderly man denied any knowledge of such behavior and the two got into a heated argument. Twice during the argument the son slapped his father on either side of his head hard enough to cause the man’s hearing aids to come out of his ears.
The 88-year-old father fell ill Dec. 1, medics were called and the man was taken to Harborview Medical Center. Doctors discovered a head injury (subdural hematoma). The elderly man died in the early morning hours of Dec. 2. The wife later told doctors about the fight between her husband and son several days earlier, and doctors concluded the man’s injury had been caused by the two slaps by the son.
Detectives arrested the 56-year-old son Sunday, Dec. 6, and booked him into the Snohomish County Jail on one count of second-degree murder.
The case remains under investigation. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy and confirm and release the victim’s name.
MLT incident
A Mountlake Terrace High School student reported that on Dec. 3 at approximately 7 a.m., a car with two males stopped near her while she waited for the bus, and asked if she needed a ride since it was cold out. She began walking back toward her home and the car followed slowly behind her until she turned the corner.
The incident occurred in the 22700 block of 66th Avenue West on the westside of I-5. It was reported immediately to the Mountlake Terrace Police, which is investigating. The car is described as older model black compact. The driver is described as white male with a medium build, in his mid 40s, unshaven with a deep voice. The passenger is a white male, also unshaven and in his mid 30s.
“I would like to commend the student for doing the correct thing and immediately returning to her home so a parent could inform police,” said Greg Schwab, principal. “I want to encourage (parents) to speak with your student and remind them to walk or wait with another student whenever possible when coming to and from school. As well as that they need to report anything suspicious immediately to an adult.”
