PREP BOYS ROUNDUP: Meadowdale stops Jackson in overtime
Published 11:25 pm Friday, January 8, 2010
LYNNWOOD — Meadowdale accomplished something Friday that eight other teams failed to do — it handed the Jackson boys basketball team its first loss of the season with 77-61 Wesco South win in overtime at Meadowdale High School.
The first hurdle for the Mavericks was finding a way to keep the ball out of the hands of Jackson’s leading scorer Brett Kingma.
“Kingma is a great player,” recognized Meadowdale head coach Chad McGuire. “The key was to stop him but we didn’t do a good job of stopping him (early in the game).”
Kingma scored 32 points for the Timberwolves, including seven 3s.
After battling back from a nine-point deficit at halftime, the Mavericks forced overtime when senior Connor Hamlett scored on an offensive rebound with six seconds remaining in the game.
Meadowdale took control of the game in overtime, outscoring Jackson 18-2.
“We came out and scored the first points in overtime and that set the tone,” said McGuire. “It gave us the momentum.”
In addition to his team-high 30 points, Hamlett had 12 rebounds and shot 12-for-13 from the free-throw line. Sam Werner added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Meadowdale.
