Cascade to name girls basketball coach

Cascade High School is on the verge of naming a new girls head basketball coach. An announcement is likely early next week, Everett School District athletic director Robert Polk said on Thursday.
The new Cascade coach — one of six applicants, and four finalists who were interviewed — will replace Carlos Humphrey, who resigned on Feb. 24 after coaching the Bruins for three seasons.
This past season Cascade was 5-15, including a 3-13 record in the Western Conference North Division. In Humphrey’s three seasons Cascade was 23-41. His best season, in terms of victories, was 2008-2009 when the Bruins won 10 games (seven in their division).
Humphrey’s resignation “was a little bit of a shock,” Cascade athletic director Doug Kloke said, “because I thought the program was improving in the sense that there were more kids (turning out) and they were excited about basketball.”
Humphrey, an Oklahoma native, played at Missouri Valley College and played professionally for two years in Europe. He previously coached Cascade’s junior-varsity and freshman girls basketball teams for three seasons in the early 2000s.
As Cascade’s head coach, Humphrey eventually became frustrated with some players’ level of commitment and got burned out, said Kloke.
“I think he just realized that maybe somebody else would have better success moving the program forward,” Kloke added.
Humphrey did not immediately return a phone message from The Herald on Thursday afternoon.
Lake Stevens’ Minor signs with Lewis-Clark cross country
Samantha Minor, a Lake Stevens High senior, signed an NCAA national letter of intent to run for the Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, Idaho), Lewis-Clark’s coach announced Wednesday in a prepared statement. Minor placed 29th at the 4A state cross country meet in November and currently runs track for Lake Stevens.
“We believe she has the ability to contribute right away,” Lewis-Clark coach Mike Collins said, “and will play a critical role in continuing the women’s streak of qualifying for nationals and winning the conference title.”
