Shorewood made some progress in its third game of the season.

But it wasn’t enough as the Thunderbirds fell 35-10 to Kamiak in a Western Conference South Division football game Sept. 18 at Shoreline Stadium.

“We improved,” said Shorewood coach Andrew Hershey. “We came out better than we have all year. Then I think we let up a little bit. Kamiak did a very good job of bringing pressure and executing their game plan.”

Following a Kamiak touchdown, Shorewood (0-2 in the league, 0-3 overall) put together a solid drive that ended at the Knights’ 18-yard line. Daniel Yun then booted a 37-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3. Kamiak then scored a touchdown later in the first quarter, two more in the second quarter and a fourth in the third quarter to take a commanding 35-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

Shorewood’s Dempsey Brown scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring. Teammate Alex Hosen ran for 56 yards and in general the Shorewood ground game was effective. The Thunderbirds use several players in addition to Hosen.

“We have a bunch of other kids who have stepped up,” Hershey said. “The running game is our best strength. We obviously have a ways to go.”

Kamiak (2-0, 2-1) was led by quarterback Jake Sortor, who completed eight of 12 passes for 192 yards and four touchdowns.

Hershey wants to see Shorewood maintain its execution throughout the entire game.

“I think we showed flashes of very good things,” he said. “We need to keep those things up for four quarters.”

The Thunderbird offense is very close to putting everything together. In the first game, Shorewood might have had eight players doing the right things. Last week, the Thunderbirds had all 11 in sync at times but also had instance where only nine or 10 players got the play right.

“It’s a different guys every time,” Hershey said. “We’re getting close to clicking.”

This week Shorewood takes on crosstown rival Shorecrest (0-3) at 7 p.m., Friday at Shoreline Stadium. The Scots lost 44-28 to Snohomish.

“This is almost like a family reunion,” Hershey said. “A lot of the kids grew up playing each other in soccer and little league. It’s an exciting game. The stadium will be packed and it’ll be a fun atmosphere.”
