PREP CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP: Mariner improving, but Cascade boys win

Published 5:40 pm Saturday, September 25, 2010

EVERETT — Small steps.

That’s what the Mariner boys cross country team is taking as it attempts to improve this season.

The young Marauders placed fourth in a five-team Wesco meet at McCollum Park Thursday, well behind Cascade, which scored an impressive 21 points to handily win the meet.

However, Mariner coach Mike Grover was not discouraged. “We’re definitely on the upswing,” Grover said of his boys’ squad. “We’re very young, and we started at the bottom, but we’re really starting to come around.”

Dylan Hopper and Aaron Campbell finished 1-2 for the Bruins, followed by four teammates in the top 10.

Snohomish’s 63 points earned the Panthers the second-place finish, with Edmonds-Woodway just behind them with 67. Mariner (96 points) and Monroe (122) rounded out the team scoring.

“Cascade dominated, but we’re competitive with the other teams now,” said Grover. “The system we’ve got in place is finally starting to work. It’s simply about getting kids who want to work.”
