PREP WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Cascade breaks tie with pin
Published 10:32 pm Saturday, December 4, 2010
EVERETT — Cascade wrestling made a double move, avenging a loss a season ago to Shorewood with a 42-36 win and a posting a 2-0 record to start the season.
With the teams tied at 36 apiece after the first 13 matches, Cascade’s Thuan Ho earned a pin at the 1 minute, 37 second mark to edge the Thunderbirds in a non-conference match Friday night at Cascade H.S.
“Thuan is a senior, a real big strong kid that is always in the weight room, and his problem is muscling the (opponents) around,” Cascade head coach Todd Freeman said of the 145-pound senior that has been on and off the varsity team the last couple seasons. “We really worked with him to settle down and use his strength explosively.”
Ho did just that, shooting at an opportune time for the takedown, then made a nifty reverse flip that eventually led to the pin.
“That’s where the strength came in,” Freeman said. “I was just saying ‘Come on get it, don’t give this guy a chance to come back.’”
Freeman acknowledged that this season is different than the other three he has coached at Cascade, saying that the Bruins, a team with only two seniors, earned the win by working hard before the season started.
“This year we worked four or five times as hard as we ever have, in the four years I have coached,” Freeman said. “Its early in the season, but the things we showed is that we are turning the corner.”
