MARYSVILLE — Archbishop Murphy wasted little time taking control of its Cascade Conference girls basketball game Tuesday as Beth Carlson scored 12 of her 17 points in the first quarter and the Wildcats rolled to a 58-23 win over Lakewood.
It was the eighth win in a row for Murphy.
Behind the play of Carlson, the Wildcats led 24-2 at the end of the first quarter.
“Of the 24 points in the first quarter, half must have been on breakaway layins,” Lakewood coach Chris Walster said. “They pressured us in the half court, they play great defense and they ran the fast break on us.”
Lead in hand, Walster said Murphy subbed liberally the rest of the game, outscoring Lakewood 34-21 the rest of the way.
Kelsy Rasmussen had 15 points for Archbishop Murphy.
Kaylee Diggs scored 10 points for Lakewood.
“(Murphy) has a lot of great athletes, they knew what they wanted to do and they did it well,” Walster said. “We had no answer for Carlson.”
