Prep boys golf: 2A State Tournament

SPOKANE — Shorecrest’s Trent Jones shot a first-round 69 and sits in a five-way tie for second place after the first day of competition at Liberty Lake Golf Course on Wednesday.

Ephrata’s Aaron Whalen shot a 66 to take a three-stroke lead over Jones and four others into today’s final round.

Archbishop Murphy’s Matthew Pabisz tied for 20th after a first-round 76, and teammates Ben Thacker (77, T-25th) and Steve Shih (78, T-29th) also survived the cut of 80.

Cedarcrest’s Steven VanValkenburg shot a 78 to tie for 29th and will also continue play today.
