Beer of the Week: Middleton Brewing’s Blood Orange Triple IPA

Blood Orange Triple IPA

Middleton Brewing, Everett

Style: Triple IPA

Stats: 10.2 percent ABV, 104 IBU

Available: On tap at the brewery.

My thoughts: It’s been four years since Geoffrey Middleton opened his brewery, tucked away in the backside of a strip mall along Everett Mall Way. This Saturday he’s not only celebrating that anniversary, but also unveiling his first big expansion since the brewery opened at 607 SE Everett Mall Way, Suite 27-A.

Speaking of big, this triple IPA is a behemoth. Eclipsing both 100 IBU and 10 percent ABV, it’s not for the timid. Middleton also dumped in 40 pounds of blood oranges per barrel to give the beer a huge citrus burst.

Along with this beer, Middleton will be pouring Who the F is Larry?!?, a lime and cilantro Mexican lager, and two beers Middleton brewed with Sound to Summit head brewer Grady Sizemore for the recent collaboration fest: Forty-Two-Five, a malt liquor based beer made with Peachie-O’s candies, and Once You Go BlackBerry, a blackberry imperial wheat.

Saturday’s event is from noon to 10 p.m. at the brewery and will include live music and a special anniversary food menu, including barbecue pulled-pork sandwiches, beer brats and carne asada burgers.

More new releases:

Purple Clouds, Skookum Brewing: A “milkshake” style IPA, Purple Clouds is brewed with puffed wild rice and loads of oats, hopped with Mosaic, Citra and Simcoe hops, and conditioned on heaps of pureed blueberries and whole vanilla beans. The beer has notes of ripe fruit, citrus and blueberry oatmeal, with a full mouthfeel and semi-sweet finish. Available on tap at the brewery.
