Anfernee Gurley made an immediate impact upon arriving on the college football scene, and last week his exploits were acknowledged.

The Archbishop Murphy High School graduate, now a freshman at Eastern Washington University, was named third-team All-Big Sky Conference as a special-teamer, the league announced last Tuesday.

Gurley, a true freshman, was a key performer on Eastern’s coverage teams. He also served as a back-up defensive back, finishing the season with 37 tackles (17 solo, 20 assists), three passes broken up and two forced fumbles.

Gurley was a star at Archbishop Murphy, where he helped lead the Wildcats to the 2016 Class 2A state championship.

Jenkins honored by GNAC

Everett High School graduate Chaz Jenkins, a senior defender on the Seattle Pacific University men’s soccer team, was named All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference first team. This was the third time Jenkins received All-GNAC honors — he was a first-team selection in 2015 and a second-teamer in 2014. He participated in 30 shutouts during his 73 career games at SPU.
