EVERETT — A goaltender standing on his head combined with a team still searching for its footing offensively was a recipe for frustration following the Everett Silvertips’ loss in their season opener Saturday.

The Silvertips couldn’t solve Vancouver goaltender David Tendeck and fell 3-1 to the Giants in front of 5,894 fans at Angels of the Winds Arena.

“(We had a) good second (period), poor third,” Everett coach Dennis Williams said. “Our guys were a little tired, and we’re short bodies obviously right now … I wanted a better effort, (but) we just didn’t have it. We came out strong in the second (period, but) they were better in the third.”

Tendeck stopped 28-of-29 shots and limited the Silvertips to one goal for the second consecutive game.

The Silvertips are short-handed up front and were forced to play defensemen Kyle Walker and Dylan Anderson on the fourth forward line. Everett struggled to generate any significant offense despite peppering plenty of shots at Tendeck. The Silvertips’ powerplay unit was 0-for-4.

A change in approach is needed, according to Everett captain Connor Dewar.

“I think we can be better in front of the net, send more bodies to the net, cause more havoc so it’s harder for (opponents) to defend,” Dewar said.

A strong second period in which the Silvertips outshot the Giants 16-6 resulted in Everett’s lone goal. Dewar knotted the score at one apiece with 1 minute, 1 second remaining in the second after Dawson Holt put Vancouver up 1-0 in the first period on a rebound.

Giants right wing Jared Dmytriw scored the game-winner with at the 9:48 mark of the third period, knifing through the Silvertips defense and gliding in a rebound after Silvertips goaltender Dustin Wolf couldn’t glove the loose puck. Justin Sourdiff added an insurance goal at the 1:26 mark to ice Vancouver’s win.

The Giants buzzed around Everett in the culminating period, outshooting the Silvertips 13-2.

Wolf stopped 26-of-28 shots.

Everett (0-2-0-0) hosts Portland at 4:05 p.m. Sunday.
