Report: Cascade grad Souza agrees to minor-league deal with M’s

Cascade High School grad Steven Souza Jr. is reportedly getting a shot with the hometown Seattle Mariners.

Souza and Seattle agreed to a minor-league deal Sunday, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

The Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish reported the deal has a split option, which would guarantee the 32-year-old Souza $1 million if he makes the big-league roster.

The right-handed hitting veteran outfielder has played 499 games with a career .230/.320/.414 slash line over seven seasons with five different MLB teams. He’s hit 71 doubles, 72 home runs and driven in 206 runs.

Souza was named The Herald’s Man of the Year in Sports for 2017 after a breakout season with the Tampa Bay Rays. He became just the third Snohomish County product to hit 30 home runs in a big league season, finishing the season with career bests in runs scored (68), hits (125), doubles (21), home runs (30), RBI (78), walks (84) on-base percentage (.351), slugging percentage (.459) and on-base plus slugging (.810).

The Everett native hit .152 with one home run and three RBI over 36 plate appearances in 17 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021 and has played in just 28 big-league games since 2019.
