Community roundup: GP grad King has strong showing at NCAA championships

Matt King made his presence felt in a big way on college swimming’s biggest stage.

The Glacier Peak High School graduate, now a sophomore on the University of Virginia men’s swimming and diving team, scored points in six events at the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship held last Wednesday through Saturday in Atlanta.

King pointed in two individual events, as he placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 41.34 seconds and 12th in the 50 freestyle in 19.02.

King was also part of four Virginia relay teams that scored points, as the Cavaliers finished fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (2:46.80), fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:14.70), 11th in the 200 medley relay (1:22.97) and 14th in the 400 medley relay (3:04.39)

King helped Virginia finish 10th in the team standings.

Greenlee receives Scenic West honor

Snohomish High School graduate Bailey Greenlee, now a junior pitcher/outfielder on the Alabama State softball team, was named the Scenic West Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 7-13. Greenlee played a role in all three games of the Hornets’ sweep of Florida A&M, earning two wins and a save while compiling a 2.57 ERA and striking out 11 in 14 innings.

For the season Greenlee is 9-7 with a 2.59 ERA, striking out 81 in 102.2 innings for the 14-15 Hornets.

Reynolds out for UW softball with concussion

Snohomish High School graduate Sami Reynolds, now a senior left fielder and All-American candidate with the University of Washington softball team, is out because of a concussion. Reynolds suffered the injury when she was hit in the head by a pitch on March 18 at California. Reynolds, who is batting .389 with four home runs and 18 RBI in 25 games, has missed Washington’s past five games, with the Huskies (20-10) losing all five.

EdC’s Lewis earns NWAC weekly award

Edmonds College’s Kaden Lewis, a freshman from Tumwater, was named the Northwest Athletic Conference’s Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 14-20. Lewis threw a two-hit shutout, walking three and striking out 10 in a 3-0 victory over Big Bend.

The left-hander is 4-1 with a 1.09 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 41.1 innings for a Tritons team that is 14-8 as it heads into North Region play, beginning with a four-game set against Everett this weekend.
