Quarterman Kummerle was a star swimmer for the Pacific Lutheran University women’s team, with which she won multiple NAIA national championships.

Quarterman Kummerle began swimming at the age of 5, and when she was at Cascade she became the first first-year from the Everett School District to ever qualify for the girls state swim meet.

At PLU Quarterman Kummerle was part of Lutes teams that won four straight Northwest Conference championships — she won 25 individual conference titles in the process — and finished second, third, fourth and fifth at the NAIA national championships. She was named an NAIA All-American all four years.

Quarterman Kummerle was also an individual force at nationals, swimming in 28 different events over the four years and placing in the top six in 27 of them. In 1986 she won an individual national title when she finished first in the 200-yard backstroke, and she was part of three PLU relay teams that won national championships.

Quarterman Kummerle was inducted into the PLU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
