EVERETT — A new police chief in Stanwood began service on Friday, a press release said.
The city announced Wednesday that Lt. Glenn DeWitt would replace Chief Jason Toner as Stanwood’s chief of police. Toner was promoted to commander of the south precinct with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, through which Stanwood contracts police services.
Stanwood spokesperson Nicole Strachila congratulated Toner on his new role in an email.
“The City appreciates Chief Toner’s many years of service and leadership,” she wrote. “He will be missed.”
DeWitt began his career in law enforcement in Snohomish County in April 2000. He has served as a corrections officer, deputy sheriff, detective and patrol sergeant, among other roles. He was promoted to lieutenant in July 2023. Also, he has volunteered for many years with the Lakewood School District and coaches middle school wrestling.
“As Chief, my focus will be on proactive and innovative policing strategies, strengthening organizational excellence, and ensuring the Stanwood Police Department remains responsive, accountable, and community centered,” DeWitt said in the release. “I am committed to building strong partnerships with residents, businesses, schools, and city leadership to foster trust and collaboration.”
DeWitt has lived and worked in North Snohomish County for more than 40 years. He graduated from Lakewood High School in 1991 and served in the U.S. Navy before beginning his law enforcement career.
“I am truly honored and excited to serve as the new Police Chief of Stanwood and work alongside the community I am sworn to protect,” he said. “This opportunity represents both a professional milestone and a personal commitment to continue serving with integrity while helping Stanwood remain a safe, welcoming, and thriving community.”
