Lake Stevens rowers place fifth at U.S. Rowing Youth National Championship

Brad Dickson and Drew McCrea, both seniors at Lake Stevens High School, placed fifth nationally in the men’s double sculls Sunday at the 2011 U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The 18-year-old Dickson and McCrea, who is 17, placed third in the same race in 2009 and s
econd a year ago. Both are headed to the University of Washington crew program in the fall.
The two Lake Stevens rowers, representing the Lake Stevens Rowing Club, covered the 2,000-meter course at Melton Hill Lake in 7 minutes, 16.27 seconds in the A final. The winning time was by the team from the GMS Rowing Center in New Milford, Conn., in 7:04.22.
Several other Snohomish County rowers competed on Sunday’s final day, including two eight-man boats from the Everett Rowing Association. Everett’s men’s varsity eight placed third in the B final, or ninth overall, with a time of 6:12.16. The boat included coxswain Charles Forrest, Austin Bentley, Sam Helms, Philip Walczak, Alex Engel, Beau Skalley, Alex Walczak, Martin Forde and Cole Borseth.
Also finishing ninth overall was Everett’s lightweight eight in 6:27.02 to place third in the B final. That boat included coxswain Joe Stavig, Austin Hall, Austin Overland, Rex Ryman, Mac Frohnen, David Hammond, Eric Engel, Mac Baker and Nikita Cardenas.
Placing first in the C final, or 13th overall, was the Everett pair of Jacob Clark and Chris Archer. They had a time of 7:39.36.
Michael Johnston of the Lake Stevens Rowing Club placed second in the C final and 13th overall in the men’s single with a time of 8:19.38.
Also from Lake Stevens, Griffen Siadak and Ryan Kessler won the C final and placed 13th overall in the men’s lightweight double in 7:27.68.
