Super sales: Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens is holding its fourth annual Great Garden Garage Sale and Cheaper Than Dirt plant sale to benefit the arboretum from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12 and 13. It’s a great place to pick up garden equipment, tools, plants, furniture and collectibles. You can even buy a hot dog lunch for $1.

The sale is held at Legion Park, 145 Alverson Blvd. and Marine View Drive, Everett. Call 425-257-8597 or go to www.evergreenarboretum.com, for more information.

Another sale: Fall is a fabulous time to plant. Lucky for us then that the plant sales aren’t through. The Northwest Horticultural Society offers its annual sale Sept. 12 and 13 at Warren G. Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way, Seattle. The hours are noon to 6:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 206-527-1794 or go to www.northwesthort.org.

Not too late: Time is running out for deck owners.

As the fall and winter rains quickly approach, the ideal window of time to waterproof a deck is closing.

With that in mind, Thompson’s WaterSeal offered these tips:

Check to see if the deck needs to be stained at all. Peeling or faded coats and mildewed wood are good indicators that it’s necessary.

Still not sure? Try a splash test. Sprinkle water on different areas. If the wood absorbs the water, turning dark within five seconds, then it’s time. If water beads or sits on the wood, you can wait.

Before waterproofing, thoroughly clean the deck. This is critical to the final look. Water seal works best when applied to a clean surface.

Read the label before applying water seal. Some seals still work on damp wood, but others need a dry deck.
