What: Pansy “Fizzy Lemonberry” produces blooms of many colors, from deep to light purple, yellow and a frilly purple picotee edge. Like many hybrid pansies, Lemonberry blooms from early spring to autumn, and is a low-growing colorful addition to the front of the border. The colors and curly edges provide a wow factor when planted in pots.
As 2017 is the Year of the Pansy, gardeners will find many beautiful color variations. The American Violet Society describes pansies as having large flowers, with two overlapping upper petals, two side petals and one on the bottom. Additionally, pansies have a slight beard in the center. Modern pansy hybrids have different characteristics from violas and violets, so the terms are not interchangeable. Look for the new trailing varieties, which are great for hanging baskets or ground covers and will be found with names like Cool Wave, WonderFall, etc. Trailing pansies spread over 2 feet wide and will overwinter in fall gardens.
Sun/shade: Morning sun and afternoon shade is preferable.
Size: The flowers will grow to 8 inches tall and 10 inches wide.
Find them: Search your favorite full-service nursery for the unusual varieties.
