They’ve grown in numbers and in confidence, and now they’re ready to put on their first public concert, a mini-musical trip across the country.

The a cappella singing group known as Voices Northwest teams up with the Seattle comedy troupe Jet City Improv to present “On the Road.”

This is a musical event based on the premise of a vacation gone awry. During this particular comic vacation, a wife has “lost” her husband in San Francisco and finds herself accidentally stuck on a bus with a group of barbershop quartet singers.

“It’s kind of a mini-musical plot,” Voices Northwest marketing director Sandy Neal said. “She gets stuck on a Sweet Adelines’ bus by accident and that takes her all over the country.”

During this crazy ride, the audience will hear nine songs, including “San Francisco Bay Blues” and “Route 66.”

The singers of Voices Northwest, who range in age from 13 to 75, sing barbershop style. They’ve been known to perform songs by Huey Lewis and The News and Gloria Estefan, and “The Phantom of the Opera” score.

Jet City Improv is known for its fast-paced comedy that invites the audience to participate and features humor that all ages can enjoy.

Other special guests for this concert include the award-winning female quartets Champagne and Cadence.

Voices Northwest is based in Everett. In the past year, the group has grown to 41 members who pack a lot of singing talent in those numbers, Neal said.

“We’re ready for this concert,” Neal said. “Our increase of members has made us ready for it and then in the regionals competition in April, we took fifth place overall and second place within our group size and that gave us the confidence to put forth a show.”
