EVERETT — A 4-year-old boy survived a fall from a fourth-floor apartment window Saturday night in north Everett, fire officials said.
The boy fell 25 to 30 feet when a window screen gave way at the Colby Crest Apartments at 2515 Colby Ave., according to the Everett Fire Department. He fell onto the second-story roof of another building and lost consciousness.
When paramedics arrived, the boy was awake and crying with his mom. He was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett with non-life threatening injuries to his head, leg and arm. He was then transferred to Seattle Children’s Hospital.
The boy’s fall came on a day when temperatures reached record highs in Everett, leading many to open their windows for fresh air.
Seattle Children’s Hospital offers a few tips to keep your kids safe near windows:
• Always supervise young children;
• Open windows 4 inches or less;
• Use window stops to to prevent them from opening more than four inches, and guards if you want to open them further; and
• Keep furniture that can be climbed upon away from windows.
The Everett Fire Department has a limited supply of window stops for low-income residents. If interested, email rdoniger@everettwa.gov. Outside of Everett, check with your local fire department for similar devices.
