EVERETT — A masked suspect who allegedly stole tens of thousands of dollars worth of Pokémon cards from an Everett game store remains at large, police said.
At 12:49 a.m. Jan. 8, surveillance footage showed an individual dressed in black breaking through the front window of MuGu Games in the 5000 block of Evergreen Way in Everett. The suspect attempted to open a display case of Pokémon cards located by the front entrance by kicking it, but when the glass remained intact, the person exited the store, according to surveillance footage the store posted to social media.
The footage showed the suspect returning moments later and shattering the display case with what appears to be an axe. After shoving various cards into a backpack, the suspect fled the scene.
“[The suspect] grabbed a few things that we’re pretty sure was his target, which were some high-end slabs,” said the store’s owner, Michael Doran. “He actually moved a shelf of cards out of the way on one of the videos.”
Doran estimates at least $30,000 worth of Pokémon cards were taken. In addition to the shattered display case, cards in near mint condition were damaged during the break-in, Doran said.
Doran has owned MuGu Games for about 15 years and said this is not the first theft at the store, citing multiple snatch-and-grab incidents and one armed robbery. Shoplifters have become more brazen, he said. Doran expressed concern over a lack of accountability.
When his lease is up, Doran said he is considering moving his business out of the area.
“It’s very frustrating owning a business here in Everett,” he said.
