OLYMPIA — A Washington man found one of the largest sand dollars of its species on a Washington beach.
The Olympian reported Eric Talaska was beachcombing at low tide last week on Puget Sound’s Eld Inlet near Olympia when he found the sand dollar that measured about 4.7 inches across. The record sand dollar, according to the Guinness World Records, measured just over 5 inches in diameter. But Talaska says the sand dollar he found was of a different species.
He hopes to get it examined by a marine biologist and recognized as the biggest sand dollar of its species.
According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s website, that species of sand dollars have an average size of 3 inches across. They live in low intertidal zones from Alaska to Baja, Calif.
Talaska recently moved to Olympia to go to college.
