50 years ago (1958)

Marked by a giant plexiglass “T,” the new Tradewell store at 4920 Evergreen Way was opening today. The building itself was a style setter, its most notable feature being a new thin-shelled scalloped concrete vaulted roof. Anson Moody of the Howarth Investment Co. said the company owned the property and leased it to Tradewell under a long-term lease.

A party was being planned at the Elks Home in honor of Sgt. Tom Campbell, who was retiring from the Washington State Patrol. Law enforcement men, those in allied services and other friends of the veteran officer were expected to attend.

25 years ago (1983)

The Mukilteo Food Bank, which had grown rapidly as the economy worsened, was having its third anniversary this month. One of 19 in the county, it started with just a small amount of food in the beginning, Joan Arnett said. This past year it helped 227 families, handing out 790 sacks of food.

Amateur naturalist Al Ryan of Coupeville, 78, was still defending and protecting sensitive natural areas. As past president of Save Whidbey Island For Tomorrow, Ryan was a leader in legal battles that stopped clear-cutting near Keystone and kept subdivisions from being built on Ebey Prairie.
