MONROE — Three people suffered serious injuries Saturday afternoon in a crash on Highway 522 just west of the Snohomish River Bridge, according to Washington State Patrol.

Several people called 911 reporting that a Kia passenger car was driving erratically and possibly was being driven by someone under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Trooper Heather Axtman said.

Troopers were trying to catch up to the Kia around 3:45 p.m. when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with another vehicle, Axtman said.

The driver of the other vehicle suffered a broken leg and was transported to EvergreenHealth Monroe. The passenger was trapped in the vehicle, unconscious, Axtman said. Both the passenger and the driver of the Kia were taken to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries.

Both directions of Highway 522 near the bridge were closed Saturday afternoon while troopers investigated.
