Unresponsive puppies left at fire station during suspected fentanyl overdose

EVERETT — Firefighters resuscitated unresponsive puppies on Sunday in Gold Bar after they were dropped off at the fire station with what first responders believe to be an overdose of fentanyl.

On Sunday, two individuals brought three unresponsive 10-week-old puppies to Station 54 along U.S. 2 in Gold Bar, according to a Sky Valley Fire social media post. All three puppies were in critical condition and experiencing respiratory arrest.

Fire crews performed life-saving procedures, including CPR, oxygen therapy and administering naloxone to the puppies, the post said. Firefighters believe the puppies were exposed to some form of environmental poisoning, citing a fentanyl overdose as a likely cause.

The puppies responded to treatment and were resuscitated.

Meanwhile, the fire officer in charge called the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were able to locate the individuals, where they also discovered three additional sick puppies, the post said.

The individuals told deputies they were watching the puppies for the owner, who was not home at the time, said Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe over email.

Deputies brought the additional puppies to the station, where first responders provided life-saving measures, the post said. First responders then transported the six puppies to Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital.

Snohomish County Animal Control Services is investigating this incident, O’Keefe said. Law enforcement has not made any arrests at this time.

On Monday, Sky Valley Fire announced all the puppies were recovering and doing well.
