Community showed it support of levies

The community of Granite Falls should be commended for renewing its commitment to the students in our community. The yes vote on both levy issues reaffirms that the Granite Falls community puts a high priority on education. There are over 2,100 winners from the election – each and every student currently attending school.

While the bond issue for the new high school failed, a 54 percent yes vote is somewhat encouraging. The board of directors will begin analyzing election results next month for a decision on when to rerun the bond issue. The growth in student population is a reality so it’s not a matter of if we need additional facilities, but when.

A special thank you goes to Mike Haug, chair of the Citizen’s Committee, and committee members Cory Hitchcock, Elizabeth Adams, Karen Hickenbottom, Jody Hillery and Steve Howell; volunteer Grace Coykendall; the members of the Granite Falls Education Association and Granite Falls Public School Employees; Nikki Connor and her students; and the countless parents and community members who made phone calls or braved the rain and cold waving signs. All of them had a positive impact on the outcome of the election.

We extend a standing ovation to the community for believing in public education and its continued support. The Granite Falls School District has set a high standard to improve student learning, maintain fiscal responsibilities and provide safe, secure facilities. The community has proven once again that learning is first in Granite Falls.
