How can separation of families be considered acceptable?

The reports of children being forcibly removed from their mothers and taken away put me in mind of another administration in another part of the world 70 some odd years ago who also practiced forced separation of children from their mothers.
If I had been asked three years ago if I could ever associate the terms vile and loathsome with our government and the office of the presidency, I would have replied “not in a million years.” Yet, here we are three short years later and the terms come all too easily to mind. Please, please, please give us back a government we can respect and admire.
At least we don’t have gas chambers and ovens.
