I’ve lived my whole life in Snohomish County and my family has gone through some tough times here. My father once lost his job and all we could afford to eat were tuna fish sandwiches. Eventually, my father got a new job and everything went back to normal, but I learned an important lesson. When times are tough, the tough mix up some tuna and mayo, put it on a slice of bread and are happy to have it.
Snohomish County government is expecting to be short millions of dollars this year and the County Council wants to get rid of the county executive’s power to limit county spending. Basically, the council wants a blank check to continue the county’s policy of massive deficit spending. I think it’s time for the Snohomish County bureaucracy to learn to enjoy a good tuna fish sandwich.
If county government is experiencing a $14 million shortfall next year, the only two options are make more or spend less. Considering the county’s only way of making more money is to take it out of my pocket in the form of taxes, I think the County Council needs to stop recklessly spending my tax dollars and start tightening its belt. I can understand that the council wants steak for dinner, but sometimes you have to be happy with tuna fish.
