AquaSox drop third straight close game in Hillsboro

HILLSBORO, Ore. — Everett’s comeback bid fell just short, and the AquaSox stumbled 4-3 to close their series against the Hillsboro Hops with a third-straight close loss.

Teddy McGraw (0-3) took the loss for the AquaSox after allowing two runs in two innings to open the game. The 23-year-old out of Cooperstown, N.Y., allowed four hits while striking out three batters.

Nick Payero followed with five strong innings on the mound, giving up six hits and two earned runs.

Trailing 4-1 after six innings, the Frogs put themselves in contention by plating two runs. Carson Jones led off with a line-drive double to centerfield against Hops reliever Daniel Nunez. Milkar Perez walked, and both runners stole a base to put themselves in scoring position.

Hops catcher Jeremiah Boyd attempted to pick off Jones at third, but his throwing error allowed Jones to trot home and reduce Everett’s deficit to 4-2. Carter Dorighi (2-for-3, double, triple, two RBI), who drove his team’s first run with a third-inning double, hit a sacrifice fly for his team’s final run of the afternoon.

Hops starter Junior Sanches issued three of Everett’s four walks and allowed four hits across five innings, but the 19-year-old right-hander limited the damage to one run.

Brandon Eike greeted Hops closer Edgar Isea with a single to lead off the ninth, but Jones grounded out and Perez lined out for Isea’s fourth save of the season.

The AquaSox open a six-game series at Funko Field at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday after Monday’s day off. The Frogs will then hose Eugene for six games to close out the month.
