Clam beach opening Saturday

The sport clam season at Belfair State Park will reopen Saturday and run until further notice, joining the year-around oyster season at the park. The area, at the toe of Hood Canal near Belfair, is best known as one of the better oyster-picking public beaches on the canal, but clamming can also be good.
Only the western half of the beach is open to clamming and/or oystering, since pollution factors keep the eastern half closed.
From Tacoma on Hwy 16 take Hwy 3 to Belfair. Watch for the right turn and signs to the state park via Hwy 300 (Northshore Drive. The park is about 3 miles west of Belfair and the entrance is well marked.
