Mill Creek golfer Kyle Cornett survived the first round of qualifying for the upcoming U.S. Open.

Cornett, a sophomore at Seattle University and the reigning Snohomish County Amateur champion, shot an even-par 72 at a qualifier held May 11 at the Home Course in Dupont. He was one of six golfers who advanced to sectional qualifying, which is scheduled for June 8 at Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum.

Cornett is vying for a spot in the 2015 U.S. Open, which takes place June 18-21 at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place.

Kuna wins Eastern Open

Luke Kuna of Snohomish shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to win the Washington Junior Golf Association’s Eastern Open, held May 2-3 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

Kuna, a junior at Snohomish High School, finished with a 36-hole total of 3-under 141. He edged Zach Evens of Mercer Island by a single stroke.

Munger named to second team

Saint Martin’s University softball standout Sam Munger was named to the All-West Region second team last week. Munger, a senior pitcher-shortstop from Everett, made the squad as a utility player.

Munger was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s 2015 Pitcher and Co-Player of the Year. She finished the regular season second in the conference in batting with a .431 average, and second in wins with 22. She also was named to the All-GNAC first team for the fourth time in her career, a feat accomplished by just seven players in GNAC history.

Munger finished her senior season with 92 hits, 54 RBI and 54 runs scored. She had a slugging percentage .612 and an on-base percentage of .468.

The All-West Region teams were selected in voting by the region’s sports information directors.
