BASEBALL

4A District 1/2 Tournament

3rd/4th-place game (both to state)

Jackson 6, Mount Si 5 (8 innings)

BELLEVUE — Micah Coleman hit a walk-off RBI single in the eighth inning and the second-seeded Timberwolves topped the sixth-seeded Wildcats in the Class 4A Wes-King bi-district tournament third-place game.

Matt Dickert forced extras with an RBI groundout in the seventh, Ryan Nakajima hit a two-run single in the second and Coleman added an RBI single in the first for Jackson (20-4). Evan Motherbaugh added a pair of doubles and scored three times.

Mount Si fell to 15-9.

3A District 1 Tournament

Championship (both to state)

Edmonds-Woodway 2, Mountlake Terrace 1

EVERETT — The Warriors of Edmonds-Woodway had to wait for their moment to strike during Saturday’s 3A District 1 championship game against ninth-seeded Mountlake Terrace.

With the Hawks hanging on two a 1-0 lead through the fourth inning, No. 2 E-W knotted it 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, finishing things off with a walk-off win in the seventh. Both teams already qualified for state.

Junior Diego Escandon stepped up and drove in his freshman brother, Cruz Escandon, for a two-out, walk-off RBI single as the ball went through the legs of Michaelson on the mound.

Consolation (winner to state, loser out)

Monroe 6, Stanwood 2

EVERETT — The Monroe High School baseball team shook off a cold start at the plate and rallied past Stanwood at Funko Field on Saturday, claiming the last available state berth in the Class 3A District 1 tournament bracket.

Following an 11-2 loss to Ferndale on Thursday, the No. 4 Bearcats (19-6) fell behind 2-0 in the first inning in a winner-to-state, loser-out challenge against the 10-seeded Spartans (13-14), who took a 1-0 loss to Shorewood in the previous round.

An RBI double from Stanwood senior Treyton Mascarenas, followed by a single from Ryan Cheeseman which plated Mascarenas, spelled troubled early on for Monroe.

However, the Bearcats defense hung tough the rest of the way, blanking Stanwood from the second inning on to secure the victory.

BOYS SOCCER

3A District 1 Tournament

Championship (both to state)

Shorewood 2, Mount Vernon 0

SHORELINE — The formula for the Shorewood High School boys soccer team in the District 1 championship game was simple: win set pieces, put the ball into the mixer and try to take advantage of its height advantage.

It took 72 minutes, but eventually the formula bore fruit, and as a result the Stormrays can call themselves champions.

Shorewood scored twice off set pieces in the final eight minutes of the game, and that was enough to give the Stormrays a 2-0 victory over the previously undefeated Mount Vernon Bulldogs in the district title game Saturday afternoon at Shoreline Stadium.

Jackson Smith and Dzanan Fikic scored the goals for fourth-seeded Shorewood (16-2-1), which finally broke down the Mount Vernon defense after knocking on the door throughout the second half. Meanwhile, the Stormrays prevented the Bulldogs from attempting a shot on goal until the 70th minute.

Consolation (winner to state, loser out)

Shorecrest 3, Mountlake Terrace 1

SHORELINE — It may have been a more roundabout route than the Shorecrest High School boys soccer team had envisioned, but the Scots are headed to state.

Shorecrest’s roller-coaster ride through the Class 3A District 1 tournament came to a happy conclusion Saturday afternoon, as the Scots avenged an earlier tournament loss by defeating Mountlake Terrace at a sunny Shoreline Stadium, thus earning the district’s fifth-and-final state tournament berth.

Yosi Haile scored twice in the first 15 minutes, and it was mostly smooth sailing from there for the second-seeded Scots (16-3-1), who survived two loser-out games at district. Levi Rosman also found the net for Shorecrest, which controlled play through much of the game.
