Seahawks pregame notes, inactives and a couple of links

Inactives are out, and Seattle will have quite an impressive collection of players in street clothes today. While many of the players out were known heading into the game, one injury question mark, Russell Okung, is inactive, meaning Alvin Bailey will start at left tackle. Kam Chancellor, who was also listed as questionable, is active, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he is playing. Teams can only declare seven players inactive, and all seven on that list are injured, so if any more than that can’t play, that just means Seattle will be playing with fewer than 46 healthy bodies this week.

Also questionable and active are centers Max Unger and Stephen Schilling, though again, their status remains in question until we get closer to kickoff. Chancellor was on the field earlier while others were going through pregame warm-ups, but didn’t do much of anything other than toss a ball around, so it’s possible he won’t play despite being active. If Chancellor can’t play, and with Jeron Johnson out because of a concussion, DeShawn Shead would like start at strong safety. And if you missed it yesterday, the Seahawks added Terrence Parks off the practice squad to bolster depth at safety, and they released receiver Bryan Walters.

With Walters gone, Seattle’s return jobs are open, and based on pregame warmups, it appears the jobs will be handled by some combination of Doug Baldwin, Richard Sherman, Paul Richardson and Kevin Norwood. Sherman handled punt returns last week and Richardson did kick returns.

Update: the Seahawks are on the field, and Kam Chancellor is not in uniform, so Shead will likely get the start. Unger and Schilling are both suited up, but third stringer Patrick Lewis has been snapping to Russell Wilson quite a bit, which could very well mean that he is starting and Schilling and Unger are emergency options.

Seahawks inactives: S Jeron Johnson, CB Byron Maxwell, LB Malcolm Smith, LB Bobby Wagner, T Russell Okung, TE Zach Miller, DT Jordan Hill.

Raiders inactives: QB Matt McGloin, WR Vincent Brown, CB Carlos Rogers, CB Chimdi Chekwa, CB Keith McGill, G Tony Bergstrom, TE David Ausberry.

Finally, to kill the time between now and kickoff, a couple of stories to read. First off, here’s today’s column looking at the game, which is one that the Seahawks really ought to win convincingly, or as linebacker Bruce Irvin put it, “We’ve got to come out fast, man. We’ve got to punch them in the mouth early, let them know how it’s going to be, and just continue to put it on them all game.”

And if you’re wondering who that rookie middle linebacker is starting for the Seahawks today, here’s a story from training camp with more info on Brock Coyle.
