Dori Monson has been hired to coach the Shorecrest High School girls basketball team, Shoreline School District athletic director Don Dalziel announced today.

Monson takes over for Ed Wissing, who guided Shorecrest to its first district championship and first state tournament appearance this past season. Wissing resigned in early June to focus on finding a full-time teaching position, Dalziel said.

Monson was Wissing’s top assistant coach the past two seasons. Before that Monson coached the Rattlesnakes AAU program, working with many players who now play on Shorecrest’s varsity squad.

Next season Shorecrest is expected to return all but one player from its groundbreaking 2009-2010 team that advanced to the Class 3A state championships and had a record of 16-7. The Scots, whose program started in 1976, earned their first district title and first state berth.

“We are excited to have someone with Dori’s experience and commitment of high expectations to continue to build the Shorecrest program,” Dalziel said in a prepared statement. “Dori is well connected in our community and has been an instrumental piece in the recent success that Shorecrest has had. We look forward to watching Dori continue to build a respected program in WESCO, District 1 and at the State level.”
