Sounders’ Montero named MLS player of the month

SEATTLE — Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero has been named Major League Soccer’s player of the month for July.

The team announced the second such honor of Montero’s two-year MLS career on Wednesday.

The native of Campo de la Cruz, Colombia, scored two goals and three assists in five July games. Seattle went 3-1-1 in that span.

Montero turned 23 last month.

The only other Sounder to be the league’s player of the month is recently traded Freddie Ljungberg. He won the award last October.
