EVERETT — As the Everett Silvertips held their exit meetings Monday following their elimination from the 2016 WHL playoffs, the organization also announced that Turner Stevenson will be the new head coach of the Junior Silvertips 16-U midget AAA team of the North American Prospects Hockey League this upcoming season.
The 43-year-old Stevenson skated 13 years in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers following his WHL career with the Seattle Thunderbirds. He served as an assistant for the T-birds during the 2007-08 season and for the Wenatchee Wild of the North American Hockey League in 2011-12.
“I’m very excited and honored to be the new head coach of the Under-16 midget team,” Stevenson said in a press release. “With the rapidly changing landscape locally and regionally, this with help me continue to be a part of advancing the growth of hockey in our area for the elite player and their families. The NAPHL gives our local and regional players the best opportunity to play in a league that will help them been seen at multiple events by junior and college scouts from all over the country.”
Stevenson, a native of Prince George, B.C., played in 644 career NHL games and won the Stanley Cup with New Jersey in 2003.
“We’re extremely pleased to welcome his knowledge, leadership, and credentials to the Silvertips family,” said Jr. Silvertips 16-U general manager Scott Brihn in the press release. “He has continued to build his resume in the coaching ranks at numerous levels and with his experience, he will be able to provide the appropriate structure to prepare players for advancement to the next level.”
Stevenson suited up in 246 career games from 1988 to 1992 for the Thunderbirds, registering 100 goals, 103 assists and 846 penalty minutes. He was named a WHL West First Team All-Star and Canadian Hockey League Second Team All-Star in 1991-92 when he had 20 goals, 32 assists and 304 penalty minutes in 58 games with the Thunderbirds. He was selected No. 12 overall by the Canadiens in the 1990 NHL draft and debuted during the 1992-93 season.
