HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Hillsboro Hops scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the Everett AquaSox, 3-2 on Saturday.
The Frogs took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning of the Northwest League game at Hillsboro Ballpark, but were unable to hold on as Everett lost for the third time in five tries in the six-game series against the Hops.
The AquaSox (17-30 second half, 54-59 overall) will attempt to come away with a split in the series finale at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday.
Gavin Schapira (3-2) blew his first save of the season. The 25-year-old left-hander walked leadoff hitter Drew Jones to open the ninth. Schapira got two strikes on Jansel Luis, but Luis responded with a one-out triple to center to tie the score at 2-2. Angel Ortiz followed with a game-winning single to right as the Hops improved to 18-29, 51-62.
The final inning spoiled an otherwise strong evening of pitching by the AquaSox.
Ryan Sloan, who is the fifth-ranked prospect in the Mariners’ minor league system, allowed one run in four innings of work in his first appearance with the AquaSox. The 19-year-old threw 52 pitches — 42 of which were strikes. The 2024 second-round pick out of York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois allowed four hits, struck out two and walked none.
Shaddon Peavyhouse followed with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Jose Geraldo held Everett’s 2-1 lead for two innings without allowing a hit. The right-hander struck out two as the AquaSox didn’t allow a walk to Hillboro batters through the first eight innings.
Everett struck first in the third inning. Axel Sanchez walked with two outs, and Carter Dorighi doubled him in with fly ball to left field for a 1-0 lead.
After Sloan allowed a tying run in the bottom of the fourth, the Frogs took the lead back in the fifth. Tai Peete walked and stole second. Brandon Eike followed with an RBI-double to put Everett up 2-1.
The AquaSox managed just three hits in the game. Luis Suisbel singled in the top of the ninth for Everett’s final hit, and Charlie Pagliarini walked. But the AquaSox were unable to tack on insurance runs as Josh Caron grounded out and Peete and Eike followed with Everett’s 10th and 11th strikeouts of the game.
