MILL CREEK — The Mariner boys basketball team broke open a tight game at the free-throw stripe to keep its hopes for a state berth alive.

Joey Dillon scored a game-high 23 points and added 10 rebounds, and the Marauder made a defensive shift en route to a 64-52 victory over Marysville-Pilchuck in a Class 4A District 1 loser-out playoff game Wednesday night at Jackson High School.

Mariner plays Stanwood in a winner-to-state game at 6 p.m. Friday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

On Wednesday, the Marauders (17-6 overall) took a slim one-point lead into the intermission after the Tommies went on a 6-0 run to close out the second period.

“It was back-and-forth in the first half,” Marauders assistant coach Rick Wike said. “We went to man-to-man in the second quarter and played man the whole second half.”

The Tommies (14-9) took a four-point lead to open the second half, but Mariner rallied to eliminate the deficit before the start of the final period.

Nick Soriano hit two 3-pointers to pull Marysville-Pilchuck within four points in the early going of the fourth quarter before the Marauders once again extended the margin, taking a double-digit lead on a 3-pointer by Stefan Doerscher.

With two minutes remaining, the Tommies began to foul to gain possessions and Mariner closed the game out at the free-throw line, making 17 of 20 from the stripe in the final period.

Doerscher finished with nine points for the Marauders, and Damascus Purnell added nine points and eight rebounds. Danny Chhann scored eight points.

The Tommies were led by Taylor Stevens’ 13 points, and Colin Thomason added 11.
